2025 Camp BioE 2.0!
2025 CampBioE 2.0
In 2007, the University of Pittsburgh Department of Bioengineering initiated CampBioE, an immersive summer camp for middle and high school scholars that explored bioengineering and regenerative medicine.
This program, under the leadership of Dr. Steven Abramowitch, aimed to immerse young minds in the wonders of science and bioengineering. An emphasis was placed on engaging scholars who come from backgrounds that are underrepresented in STEM+. CampBioE 2.0, initiated in 2024 under the leadership of Dr. Katrina Knight, extends CampBioE to include elementary school scholars (i.e., now incorporating scholars from grades 2nd – 12th), with continued focus on inspiring the next generation of scientific and medical professionals and fostering lasting engagement in STEM⁺, particularly among underrepresented minority scholars.
Our goal is to develop a
pipeline that engages scholars (2nd-12th grade) in the
wonders of science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and medicine through
exposure to cutting-edge, hands-on activities related to bioengineering and
mentorship.
Over
the past seventeen years, this program has reached more than 1,200 scholars
from Western PA and beyond. Many of our camp participants have continued to be
involved with STEM+ fields, identifying bioengineering as their
intended career choice and some now working for the very companies that helped
to support our program. This positive outcome is truly inspiring.
The
goals of the 2025 CampBioE 2.0 effort remain unchanged. This year we will
be collaborating with the Vascular Medicine Institute’s VESSELS program (directed
by Dr. Daniel Shiwarski) to incorporate 3D bioprinting in the curriculum. With
your help and generosity, we will continue our work educating and engaging scholars
in STEM+, particularly in bioengineering, and your support on Pitt
Day of Giving will directly help us provide 2025 CampBioE 2.0 free of charge
for economically disadvantaged scholars.
