CS Department degrees, research opportunities, and community create an environment for success 59 years of Computer Science at Pitt
The Department of Computer Science celebrates 59 years of
research and teaching excellence. Our community includes 37 full-time faculty
members, two staff members, over 100 graduate students, over 900 pre-CS/CS
majors, and thousands of alumni. We are part of the School of Computing and
Information (est. 2017).
Our faculty is exploring computer science research in
various areas,
from algorithms
and theory to quantum
computing and everything in between. We encourage all CS majors
to be involved
in research. View our research areas.
We all recognize computer science's critical role to the
rest of the University, our region, and society. We have been working for
over 15 years to broaden participation in computing with targeted
programs to recruit and retain members of underrepresented groups (Diversity
Initiatives) and to expand the computing pipeline with K-12 Outreach activities.
Our faculty have been recipients of NASA
Early CAREER grants, Google
Academic Research Awards, and NSF
grants for their research. These research efforts range in impact from
empowering smallholder farmers in the global south to advancing our
understanding of the effect of water and energy cycles on global carbon
emission rates.
