European Studies Center

The European Studies Center is the place to be to learn about all things Europe and the European Union at Pitt! We have been designated a National Resource Center for European Studies by the U.S. Department of Education and a Jean Monnet Center of Excellence by the European Commission. Since 1984, we have worked in cooperation with academic departments, schools, and research units throughout the University to provide a deeper understanding of contemporary and historical Europe and the European Union to both the Pitt and to wider Western Pennsylvania communities. Students have the opportunity to choose from several certificates: West European Studies, European Union Studies, Transatlantic Studies Mediterranean Studies, and a Related Concentration in European and Eurasian Studies.

Witnessing the changes around us–both in terms of the challenges facing the people and governments of Europe and those facing students entering the workforce--we have embarked on a mission to re-think, re-imagine, and re-define what area studies and a traditional area studies center are, what we do, and how we understand Europe. We believe that area and language studies provide students with the understanding and skills they will need to navigate, compete, and be successful in their careers and in their lives. Our programming, scholarship, teaching and community engagement reflect this larger goal.
