Frances Hesselbein Leadership Forum

The Frances Hesselbein Leadership Forum at the University of Pittsburgh reflects the vision of a university-based center for teaching, applied research, and public service where leaders and aspiring leaders from around the world can gather to advance the art and science of leadership. The Forum advances the legacy of Presidential Medal of Freedom recipient Frances Hesselbein, who was widely regarded as one of the most respected experts in the field of contemporary leadership development.

The Hesselbein Forum’s mission is to develop and inspire current and future leaders. Since Frances’ passing in December 2022, this work has been more important than ever, and funds raised in this campaign will be used to further her legacy of servant leadership.

Your gift will help the Forum advance its mission through several initiatives that support leadership development on campus and around the world, such as:

  • The Hesselbein Lecture series brings scholars and practitioners to campus to share practical advice about leadership based on their lived experiences.
  • The Leadership Program in International Affairs (LPIA) is a semester-long, extracurricular program that seeks to increase students' abilities to be effective leaders in the international arena and to deal effectively with leaders across cultures.
  • We publish the award-winning journal Leader to Leader, which offers cutting-edge thinking on leadership, management, and strategy written by today's top thought leaders from the private, public, and social sectors.

Frances’ legacy is extensive, and it continues to grow! Your contribution allows Frances’ example and leadership philosophy to continue to impact students and young leaders, working professionals, and leaders from all sectors.

Reflections from Students

“My experience at the Johnson Institute and Frances Hesselbein Leadership Forum sharpened my leadership abilities and professional skills so that I can effectively pursue a career serving the global community. My colleagues and advisors were indispensable resources to whom I credit for my success at GSPIA.” - Tim Mullen, MPIA ’23

“Through [the Hesselbein Forum Executive Coach] coaching and coffee sessions, I learned tangible skills in time management and goal planning that helped me achieve my academic and professional goals. Our mentor was also very approachable and a great person to have as a friend and advisor.” - Former student and Forum participant

“I’m very glad I did the [LPIA] program. Leadership analysis was not a skill I had learned prior to the program. I found it to be fun, challenging, and actionable.” - Former student and Forum participant
