Habitat for Humanity at Pitt
We all lead separate lives within society, pursuing various occupations and passions that make us unique contributors to the infrastructure of our planet. Yet, our commonality lies in the place we return to at the end of each day—a place we collectively call home. A home that should be safe, comfortable, and affordable for all. Unfortunately, for many in our community, this is not the reality. Substandard housing and skyrocketing sales prices contribute to homelessness and the inability of many to secure a home. That’s why we, Habitat at Pitt, are here to help. We are a student organization that partners with Habitat for Humanity, a global nonprofit dedicated to building homes, communities, and hope for those in need. By donating to Habitat at Pitt, you join us in making a tangible difference.
Habitat at Pitt is a campus chapter of Habitat for Humanity, an international movement founded in 1976 by Millard and Linda Fuller. Their nonprofit mission was to build homes through community collaboration, with a greater goal of uniting volunteers with those in need of adequate housing. The mission was endorsed by U.S. President Jimmy Carter, who supported the cause through donations and volunteer efforts across the country, helping raise awareness for affordable housing. Since its inception, Habitat for Humanity, with the help of President Carter, has assisted more than 59 million people in improving their living conditions in over 70 countries. Habitat at Pitt is proud to be one of the many campus chapters supporting Habitat for Humanity’s mission and vision.
As a student organization, our club is centered around various activities and events that raise awareness, funds, and volunteers for Habitat for Humanity. These include:
Weekly Workdays: We partner with local organizations, such as Open Hands Ministry, the Millvale Community Development Corporation, and Armstrong Habitat for Humanity, to build or repair homes for low-income families in our community. We provide transportation, tools, and training for all volunteers.
Spring Service Trip: Each year, we travel to Cape Fear Habitat for Humanity in North Carolina as part of the College Build Challenge. This program involves college students in building affordable housing. For one week, we work passionately, volunteering 8 hours a day to build a home from the ground up.
Awareness Campaigns: We spread the word about Habitat for Humanity through weekly meetings, fundraising events, and social media posts featuring photos from our workdays.
Through these activities, we not only support Habitat for Humanity’s mission but also gain valuable skills such as tool etiquette, leadership, inclusivity, teamwork, communication, and problem-solving. We also form lasting friendships, have fun, and experience a deep sense of fulfillment and purpose.
However, none of this would be possible without your support. Your donation to our student organization will enable us to continue and expand our work with Habitat for Humanity. Your contribution will help cover:
Transportation: We need to fund transportation costs for travel to and from building sites, both locally and for our service trip to Cape Fear, North Carolina.
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): We must purchase essential PPE, including gloves, masks, goggles, and hard hats, to ensure the safety of all our volunteers.
Every donation, no matter the size, makes a significant impact and brings us closer to our goals. By donating to Habitat at Pitt, you are not only supporting Habitat for Humanity’s vision of a world where everyone has a decent place to live, but also helping families and communities benefit from the organization's life-changing work. You’re providing more than just a house—you’re giving the gift of a home.
