The Department of Infectious Diseases and Microbiology (IDM)
faculty and students engage in basic and applied research on infectious
diseases that impact the health and well-being of populations globally. Ongoing
research efforts encompass various endemic and emerging infectious diseases,
including tuberculosis, influenza, Zika, Dengue, HIV/AIDS, COVID-19, Lyme
disease and Rift Valley fever. Investigations are conducted within
state-of-the-art BSL-2 and BSL-3 laboratory facilities, fostered by
collaborations with the University of Pittsburgh Center for Vaccine Research.
One of only a handful of such departments housed within a school of public
health, IDM leads cutting-edge research and provides students with a unique
education and research experience.
