What is Pitt's Summer Language Institute?

Pitt’s Summer Language Institute (SLI) offers students of many backgrounds the opportunity to immerse themselves in their choice of eleven different languages and cultures of Eastern Europe, Central Europe, and the Near East. Students gather in Pittsburgh each June to learn a year’s worth of language in just two months! Later in the summer, many students travel abroad with SLI or participate an SLI internship to immediately apply their new language skills out in the world.

How may my donation be used?

- Need-based scholarships

- Support for less-commonly-taught languages and extended language level offerings

- Local excursions and cultural events

- Community engagement programming

Can I support a specific area of study?

Donors have the option to choose one of three options when they give:

·       General Summer Language Institute Support

·       Polish and Ukrainian Program Support

·       Balkan and Black Sea Program Support

Donors who are interested in making larger gifts to specific projects or language programs should reach out to SLI management directly at sliadmin@pitt.edu.
