Description
Being the first to do anything presents unique challenges, such as being one of the 1.46 million undergrads nationwide who is the first in their family to earn a college degree. TRIO Student Support Services (SSS) at Pitt has served first-generation, low-income, and/or disabled students since 1972 with great success, as evidenced via data as well as through the stories of our thousands of alumni. Through academic advising, tutoring, workshops, Right Start to College classes, and cultural activities, the SSS team has cultivated an environment of success in which our scholars thrive. Moreover, we have created an SSS family that has endured for more than 50 years.
This program is unique because it supports many first generation and/or low-income students regardless of school or major. When asked about what impact TRIO SSS has had on them, one student responded, "They believe in me when no one else does." Another student described the impact of TRIO SSS by stating, "TRIO has allowed me to gain a community of lifelong friends, career opportunities, and an awareness of myself, others, and the world around me."
Donations are applied to...
100% of the donations collected will be applied to providing direct financial support to TRIO SSS Scholars in the form of emergency funding, scholarships, or high-impact student experiences to which they otherwise would not have access.
Personal Message
The TRIO SSS Scholars and staff thank you for your support! Any donation of any size is sure to make a significant impact on the lives of our TRIO SSS Scholars!
Why are donations necessary?
TRIO SSS is a federally funded grant. The program is not permitted per federal regulations to use grant funds to provide direct aid to students in the form of scholarships, emergency funds, or support for other high-impact student experiences such as travel to professional conferences or international travel. The need for direct aid for program students has grown over the years as the cost of attending college has risen, leaving fewer financial resources available for students to invest in experiences outside of their regular cost of attendance.
